David Winch

David is a good friend and associate of mine who has some really interesting things to say related to Professional Service Providers and others getting more business, higher profits, improving their cash-flow and generally getting paid what they're worth by a process he calls Selling Without Selling.

I know this because I have heard him speak about this myself.

David is a recognised expert on value-based pricing and the selling strategies that go with it. I've read what he has to say on his website at http://www.davidwinch.co.uk/sws.htm and it really is good stuff.

He's running a Free one-day taster in Cambridge on March 30th and I feel you should think seriously about going along to find out more about what he has to say, particularly if you sell business services.

5 Notable Business Authors, Influencers and Speakers

This month we look at Rob Warlow and his book, Loan Sharp.

I’ve known Rob for about two years and he quotes me in a couple of places in the book. In February he was one of the guest speakers at the Right Angle Consultants event on Breaking the Barriers to Business Growth and his presentation was absolutely great.

As many of you know, helping businesses raise finance is something I do for a living and I have over 20 years experience in talking to bankers and other providers of funds and I can tell you straight that reading and studying Rob’s book would really help you get the money you seek.

Others also agree with me and I list below some of the comments on Amazon I agree with about the book.

‘After the credit crunch and the recession small business owners are in desperate need of finance and yet many have seen their banks turn them away. If this is you, then you may have resigned yourself to the notion that there is nothing you can do ...but you're wrong! The rules of the game may have changed but ‘Loan Sharp’ will show how you can get back in control.’

‘Rob Warlow outlines the steps you can take to significantly improve your chances of obtaining the business finance you need... Rob shares his 25 years of banking experience and lays bare exactly what information banks need from you.....Loan Sharp is an excellent book packed with practical tips on how you can get the business finance you need.’

‘Loan Sharp has a detailed look at the banker's acronym CAMPARI which explains how your loan will be assessed (Character, Ability, Margin, Purpose, Amount, Repayment, Insurance). It's not the only method used but it does shine the spotlight on the issues relevant to the bank which you need to answer.’

'I particularly like the ‘Oh no, he wants a business plan’ which made me smile at the sheer panic this invokes in borrowers, but the book guides you through this very tricky topic and more. If you are serious about raising the finance you need for a new business, this book will be of benefit.’

‘The book prepares you both mentally and physically talking about both balance sheets and body language so you are in the best position.’

‘...he is good and he knows his stuff. His experience within the financial world of banking is evident and he has taken the time to give us an insight to the bankers’ world and how the bank manager thinks!’

’......written by an expert who has been willing to share from his experiential learning.’

’This book is a great investment to those looking to set up or grow their business and require funding.’

'Get the business finance you deserve'. Rob is upfront in saying that taking a loan from a bank should be your funding choice of last resort. He takes you through the alternative sources of finance your business from angel investors to family members to your savings, ending up with what you need to do if the bank is your choice.’

'But the preparation in having a business plan, practised pitch, and good presentation are critical, as is establishing a relationship with the bank prior to meeting with the bank manager.’

'The detail into which your bank manager will go, and the way your application will be assessed is set out for you, and should give you plenty of food for thought as you complete your preparation.’

A final word on Rob’s book from Robert Craven: ‘When it comes to dealing with your banker, you can put your head in the sand and pretend they don't exist or you can try and understand what it is that the banker wants and is looking for. This book helps you give the banker what they want so you get what you want.’ --ROBERT CRAVEN, Author of Bright Marketing and Kick-Start Your Business.

4 A short note on change

Last month I attended a workshop on Strategic Thinking given by Paul Ovington, who put forward the idea that dramatic change could well be the new normal and things were not going to go back to how they had been before 2006.

I don’t wish to repeat Paul’s thoughts and suggestions as he will be repeating the workshop in the autumn but it got my own grey cells going.

My list of ‘things that will never be the same again’ includes:

1 Commercial Property
On line retailing and hot desking together mean that the relative demand for commercial property compared to economic activity in the UK will continue to decline.

Owners of commercial property in secondary sites should be thinking of selling or campaigning for change of use.

Ever increasing trade over the Internet and the growth in sales of digital products plus cloud computing mean the need for conventional retail and office space is declining.

The number of high street coffee shops is reaching saturation in many areas and although main brand mini food retailing from Tesco, M & S, J Sainsbury and the rest will continue to replace many generalist food independents, saturation is on the horizon.

2 The replacement of Road Motorways with the Digital Highway

Although not yet as obvious, the increasing price of oil and taxes is making car ownership and use less attractive.

Electric cars are not the answer. The government cannot afford to lose the revenue it gets from the taxes on fuel and cars, which in part go to pay for road building. Taxes on motoring will continue to rise and increasingly low cost availability of video conferencing will lead to the reduction of business and commercial motoring even for goods.

Next month a return to including a review of leading thinkers and writers, possibly Grant Leboff’s new book which I am taking on holiday this week.

4 North London ecademy Blackstar Boardroom – June 10th

Selling Without Selling

David Winch has a new FREE workshop, Selling without Selling, which I attended in March at a wonderful Cambridge College venue.

If you sell services you should attend the next one. I found the day of great value and learned much about pricing for value not time.

David has been using this approach himself for over a year and it has improved both his customer conversion rate and the fees he earns while leaving his clients happier than ever.

1 Right Angle Consultants – Business Start Up Show Excel May 19th and 20th

We went, we spoke, we networked. My thanks to Paul Ovington, Alison Branagan, Andrew Ferguson and Mary Thomas for their fantastic support on Stand 263 at this event.

This was the biggest thing we have been involved with and was a major investment of around £4,000. The aim, to raise our profile as a Specialist Business Training and Business Support organisation, was achieved in part, see www.bstartup.com/exhibitorsand www.bstartup.com/seminars

We sold 6 books but had 7 stolen, we spoke in Hall 2 to a packed room of over 80 people with some sitting on the floor, we engaged with over 100 more on the stand and gave away hundreds of leaflets and dozens of business cards
.

The follow up work has begun.

2 Right Angle Consultants – Breaking the Barriers to Business Growth book.

Paul and Sarah Williams are coordinating this work and it looks as if we will have over 10 authors by publication date.

3 National Alliance of Business Owners (NABO) North London events.

The first meeting of the Barnet and Enfield branch, to be hosted by Albert Wright will be in July.

4 North London ecademy Blackstar Boardroom – June 10th

Come to Chez Ton Ton in East Barnet Road London at 12 noon for 3 hours of networking and discussion of business issues.

You don’t have to be an ecademy member to try us out. We meet on the second Friday of the month from 12.30 to 3.30 pm – price for lunch, coffee, networking and being in the Issues Spotlight only £30.

Call Albert on 07973 192712 or see the Black Star Boardroom section on ecademy for details.

People who place their business issue in the Issues Spotlight get valuable insights into what they might do next from other members of the group.

The advice is totally independent and all who have experienced the Issues Spotlight so far agree it is outstanding value at £30.
