1 Wright’s Rant of the Month – Big Problems – Dramatic Solutions

Restructure of the Public Sector - Big Problem

The Welfare State has become too big and is now counterproductive

That, which was created to help, now exhibits the law of Paradox – it now hinders. What do I mean?

Public sector final salary pension schemes from age 50 (see police pensions) after 30 years of work and contributions at 6.5% of salary, will not fund 40 years of retirement at 50% of final salary

The maths don’t work now, have not worked for at least the last 10 years and will not work in the UK for the next 50 years.

Public Health and Education Services, free at the point of use, also exhibit the Paradox that as more money is spent less is achieved because services are free.

Take diabetes and obesity. We all know what needs to be done, I do: eat less, eat better and exercise more. BUT WE DON’T DO IT, I don’t do it, because there are no sanctions or immediate, overwhelming reasons why we should and yet we get free prescriptions and free exhortations, which are costing the tax payer billions.

We will continue to spend more and more to achieve less and less.

In education, numeracy and literacy abilities seem to be declining. At age 16, many young people are not competent to get a job. Employers and tax payers have to pay again to provide the basic skills the schools should have already provided.

Why don’t people work harder to get a better education – because the welfare benefits system is too generous and people can survive without having to get a job?

Too many young people aged 16 to 24, funded by taxpayers, drop out of courses without getting a qualification.

It was free education the first time and now we have to pay twice

Dramatic Solution necessary.

In health, suspend Free prescriptions if we, the patient, aged over 18 years, take no action to improve our own health

The state should let lazy, unhealthy, adult people who refuse to help themselves die earlier, if this is their choice.

In education the solution is more complex and more difficult

Sanctions need to be imposed on failing parents, teachers and schools and not the pupils – particularly those aged under 11 in Primary Schools.

With suitable safeguards in place, those who have failed us and the young people in their care should be initially surcharged and ultimately sacked (in the case of teachers and school staff) and surcharged / have benefits cut / children taken into care / in the case of parents who do not do enough to ensure proper learning and skills acquisition by their children.

In countries where parents need to be supported by their children and not the state in their old age, the children seem better equipped for the world of work and general independent survival.

I realise my diagnosis and treatment may not be popular but we need to take action before we waste even more money.

Your Comments are sought. More on this in the months to come.
